This blog post is all about how I’ve transformed my haircare with clean beauty that actually works. You might ask, “What is Clean Beauty?” According to Harper’s BAZAAR here, “Clean Beauty is a spectrum…” with a variety of beauty ingredients that should be avoided in skincare, makeup, and haircare because of their toxicity, side effects, and harm to the human person, environment, and animals. In a nut shell, clean means safe for humans and animals, green means safe for the environment, organic means certified by the USDA to contain no genetically modified organisms, nontoxic means the avoidance of anything that causes adverse health effects, sustainable means both the ingredients and packaging are safe for the environment without causing unnecessary waste, vegan means nothing sourced from animals, and cruelty-free means nothing has been tested on animals (see Harper’s BAZAAR here).
I eat a completely vegan diet, and it was only a matter of time before I started incorporating healthier choices for my skincare, makeup, and haircare. Just as I was vegetarian and then gradually became vegan, I’ve noticed that the beauty products that I have tended to gravitate towards lately are more clean. While I might still use skincare, makeup, and haircare products that don’t entirely meet the entire list above, I’ve grown to appreciate more and more what clean beauty has to offer.
For example, I’ve been incorporating more plant-based, vegan, nontoxic, organic, and cruelty-free skincare and makeup into my routine. And just several weeks ago, I discovered Kavella Hair Care.

I know what my hair needs. I’ve always preferred to have long flowing hair, but that requires coloring, blow drying, heat styling, lots of styling products, and washing. I average 8 to 10 km daily runs, which means I sweat A LOT. My entire scalp and hair are drenched with sweat. There is no way I’m not washing my hair afterwards, which means I wash my hair every single day. Yes, I know… washing too much is damaging to hair. Even my colorist tells me this every visit to the salon. So, imagine my daily washing, blow drying, heat styling, etc. My hair needs A LOT of care.

This shampoo not only cleans the sweat from my morning runs and removes any buildup, it detoxifies my scalp for healthier growing hair. This shampoo is game-changing because it cleans while it nourishes.
While I love a good conditioner, I often find the rinse-off ones inadequate. I love the option of a leave-in lotion that not only hydrates, but allows my hair to marinate in healthy oils, aloe vera, and baobab protein for the fullest effect. If I put baobab powder in my smoothies, I can definitely leave it in my hair!
Call me crazy or a beauty guru, but in addition to a leave-in lotion, I top off my hair with a recovery mask overnight. This one contains olive wax, an alternative to beeswax, that coats my hair and ensures recovery and nourishment overnight.
Before blowdrying or any heat styling, a haircare must is a defining cream. Who wants frizzy dry hair? I love how this one allows me to style my hair with a flat iron to create the perfect sleek look or curl without the worry of damaging my hair.
Lastly and my favorite Kavella Hair Care product is this mist! I use a face mist all the time. I literally use one to refresh my skin or set my makeup. This hair mist is just as versatile for refreshing my hair with an added boost of hydration, prepping my hair for heat styling, or setting my hair after styling. I absolutely love it.
